Giving back: how our team used their good cause leave
2 June 2026
At HFL, our good cause leave exists because we believe that time is one of the most valuable things anyone can give and that what our people do outside of work is worth supporting.
National Volunteers' Week is a good moment to celebrate the people who quietly give their time to causes they care about and recognise the generous work that happens outside of office hours - and sometimes during them.
At HFL, our good cause leave exists because we believe that time is one of the most valuable things anyone can give, and that what our people do outside of work is worth supporting. Here's how a few of our team have used their time.
When Mostly Books, a charity book shop selling books to raise funds for the RNLI and Samaritans, needed to move several hundred books out of the stock room, Emma Bailey used her good cause leave to ensure these books were moved within the day. Emma also volunteers in the shop every Saturday.
Charlotte O'Connor put her crochet skills to good use and used her time to make tiny outfits for premature babies in support of the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation. The PPBF gifts Baby Boxes to families staying on Guernsey’s Neonatal Unit which includes handmade items, as well as other essentials and keepsakes.
The Guernsey Alzheimer's Association needed volunteers for their Flag Day, and Charlotte Hill stood outside Waitrose, bucket in hand, to collect donations for the charity to ensure they can continue supporting people living with dementia and those who care for them.
And Michelle Mauger gave her time to Les Bourgs Hospice, offering a friendly face on reception at a place that means an enormous amount to people across the island.
Four people. Four completely different ways of helping. All of it worthwhile.
